Aromatherapy as a Complimentary Treatment for Anxiety

Evidential studies show that anxiety disorders are some of the most prevalent psychological problems around the world (Setzer, 2009). Anxiety is characterized by intense feelings of fear, worry, and tension and presents physical, psychological and physiological symptoms in the body. Generally, anxiety is treated with medications that cause unwanted side effects, some being life threatening. To address anxiety safely and promote mental health wellbeing, various alternative and complementary methods have been recruited due to the evidential effectiveness, one being the use of aromatherapy essential oils as a complimentary treatment for anxiety in patients. Studies and clinical trials were conducted through research facilities, universities, and within psychiatric hospitals using essential oils through massage and inhalation. The studies and clinical trials showed significant evidence that essential oils such as lavender, Lavandula angustifolia and geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, among others, can safely treat physical, psychological and physiological symptoms of anxiety.
